To clown around (ya tiene connotaciones de no contribuir, de no hacer tu parte)
To arse around (BrE, inf., casi vulg.)

To play the fool.
To goof off.

Maybe also 'to goof around' :)

A propósito: ¿se utiliza mucho esta expresión? ¿Más que por ejemplo 'hacer el payaso' ?

Ambas, hacer el ganso es menos denigrante que hacer el payaso.
