Am I Translating This Correctly?
 

Hey guys! I'm trying to write a simple thank you note to someone. What I have is:

"Muchas gracias por los regalos divertidos. ¡Los encanto! Esperamos su año nuevo es maravilloso."

which should translate to:

"Thank you so much for the fun gifts. I love them! We hope your new year is wonderful."

I know this should be pretty simple for me to do by now but pregnancy brain is a son-of-a-gun! Just wanted to double check my Spanish. Thanks!

As a chilean I would write "entretenidos" instead of "divertidos"

The English looks fine to me, but I question the Spanish - surely it should be: Esperamos su año nuevo sea maravilloso :thinking::thinking:

Perikles, I see that you're using the subjunctive of "ser". I haven't done too much with the subjunctive yet.

My Spanish is still in the beginner stages more or less, but shouldn't it be "Nos encantan"? Because you are actually saying "They (the gifts) delight us." Right?

Ah, I see now that you are translating into Spanish. (My wife has just told me that I must be insane to think otherwise).:eek:

Anyway, if you want to say literally 'I hope that ...' using esperar, you do need a subjunctive. (literally, the action of having a prosperous New Year is not certain, so you say I hope that the NY may be ....with subjunctive)

See I thought that "nos encantan" would be "we love", referencing more than one person who loves xyz, no?

OK, got it! I see why the subjunctive would be used here. Do you think a native speaker would get what I was trying to say though, even if my Spanish needs a lot of work? *bag*.

it looks like she tought it in her head and wrote it directly to Spanish and then she made the translation to English.

Now, shouldn't the English version be:...I hope your New Year be wonderful?

Nope - hope in English does not use a subjunctive. You could say "may your New Year be wonderful" because this is an optative construction which of course requires a subjunctive verb. :D:D

Hmmm, I always thought when stating that phrase in English people referred to it as the event rather than the whole year to come...and that's why the "is" fitted perfectly in my little mind. :)

I'm sorry - I thought the gifts were for you and your family, so I thought you were saying "we loved them". I missed the "I" part in your English version.

Anyway - my point was more about the conjugation of "encantar". I think that the subject of the sentence is the gifts (third person plural) and that the object of the sentence is yourself (first person singular). So I think that the conjugation should be "Me encantan (los regalos)" meaning, more literally, "The gifts are loved by me..."

Please, will someone more knowledgeable about Spanish verify this...? Thanks!

You can see that my version is very close to what you wrote initially which I think is correct.

Hey, Elaina - take a look at what I wrote (and the answer) earlier. It's not "we" who love the gifts, it's "I" who loves the gifts. MY question is still should it be "Me encanta" or "Me encanto"? I say it's the first.....
