Es de dominio público

When sth is an open secret, we say es un secreto a voces o es de dominio público, In English public domain?????

It's public knowledge.

"In the public domain" sería correcto pero hoy en día, para mí al menos, tiene connotaciones fuertes de "estar libre de copyright".

It depends. As pjt says, 'public knowledge' is any information which is supposed to be secret (on the level of e.g. some film star is pregnant). 'Public domain' has a legal significance - you can download 'public domain' software without breaking the law. :)

I know about software being in the public domain.

What I am asking is if instead of being public knowledge, use of public domain.

No - it is public knowledge or in the public domain.

Ok, thanks. :)

Commonly heard in North America, when a secret becomes known:

"It's public information, now."

Also, figuratively, "The cat's out of the bag."
Or, "Who let the cat out of the bag?"

Or, "Who spilled the beans?"
