Hola a todos:

En el libro de gramática "Gramática básica del estudiante de español" dice que se dice "La fiesta del sábado fue preciosa" no "era preciosa". Me preguntaba de si con el contexto adecuado sí se podría usar "era".

En la fiesta uno se puede pensar a sí mismo, "la fiesta es preciosa" y luego recordar "la fiesta del sábado era preciosa" ¿no? ¿Y tal vez se agregaría un poco más de descripciones "la fiesta del sábado era preciosa. Había muchísima gente, música de todos tipos...Me gustó mucho."?

¿O se puede decir "la fiesta del sábado fue preciosa" (desde el principio hasta el final)?

Similarmente dice que se dice "¿Cómo fue la fiesta de cumpleaños?" ¿No se puede decir "¿Cómo era la fiesta de cumpleaños" si quieres que el hablante describa con más detalles la fiesta?

Ex.

-¿Cómo era la fiesta?
-Era muy divertida. Había mucha gente, toda clase de música...Me divertí mucho.

-¿Cómo fue la fiesta?
-Fue muy divertida. Había mucha gente, toda clase de música...Me divertí mucho.

I think you can say both. Como fue is more common. It means how did it go or how did it happen--like "how did the party go last night."

With como era the meaning changes a little. Example: En los año setenta
las fiestas eran bacanales.

poli is right, both can be use as synonyms here. But there is a clear difference in the use: poli describes very well "cómo fue", and the difference with "cómo era" is that with "cómo era", generally speaking, you are asking about how the party was, you want him to describe it (in the other case you can be asking this, or, most of the time, how did the party go...)

If you use "cómo estuvo/estaba", you are asking how the party went.

Definitely you can use both phrases in the Spanish.

Preterite: Fui al cine=I went to the movies (concluded in the past)
Imperfect:Iba al cine=I used to/would go to the movies (ongoing in the past)

Ejemplos:

Siempre fui al cine=I always went to the movies (concluded in the past)
Siempre iba al cine=I always used to go to the movies (ongoing in the past)/I would always go to the movies
Ayer fui al cine=I went to the movies yesterday
Ayer iba al cine cuando empezó a llover=I was going to the movies yesterday when it started to rain
