I aint givin out my age.. cuz it aint nutin but a number!!! LOL thanks in advance for your help! David T  |
Cuates are twins or a matching pair.
Mellizos is another word for twins more international than cuates which is a term that may not cross the Atlantic. |

Mellizos is also another name for twins which I had forgotten about too, yes you are right about that... I dont know I just got a hair up my ... and was wondering about the origin of the word imagues or it might be himagues since the H is silent? who knows... thanks everyone for your helpful input!!! There's a difference between "gemelos" and "mellizos", at least on this side of the Atlantic.
Gemelos are identical twins Mellizos are non-identical twins |

This problem reminds me of when I was with an Italian girl who saw a large pram (cochecito). "Look" she said - "two twins". Then, on further inspection "No - it's three twins".

@Spanglish: The Cuban word you're looking for is "jimaguas". :)

I can't say much, because that's not a word I knew; I asked someone who has Cuban acquaintances. But you can find it in the RAE dictionary or google "jimagua" or "jimaguas" and you'll find translations and maybe some more about its usage. :) |

translation words for twins
Yes, jimaguas is Cuban for twins. It is the term my family uses to refer to my twin cousins. Even though it is the h which should be silent in the Spanish language, usually when we say this word you can't hear the j.
if i were to do a proununciation of how it sounds with the english alphabet it would look like this: EE ma guas (hard g like goat and soft a like apple in both places). hence the mistaken feeling that it may start with an h; but it doesn't. i hope this helped :butterfly: |
Bienvenida Cubana, gracias por la información :D
