Introducing myself
Hello everybody,
just found this forum. As a frequent traveller I need a little help in translations, especially into Spanish. I'm born and lived most of my life in Cologne,Germany. Twenty years ago I moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I own one of the big motorhomes (42ft.) which we used to travel or stay on the road for a few months a year. In 2008 we bought a home in the village of Binissalem on the island of Mallorca to spent the summer there. Having 9 years of Latin in school, having basic knowledge of Italian language I'm now in the situation to speak and write Spanish. But which Spanish? Kastilian in an area wher the official language is Catalan and everybody speaks Mallorquin (local dialect)? A lot of questions. Anyway, best regards to all of you Hermann (the German) |
Hi and welcome.
In Fort Lauderdale, Castillian (CUBAN style) is the language to speak. People will encourage you to use it. If you travel to Spain a lot, Castillian should still be your focus. Almost everyone understands Castillian in Spain even if may be their second language, but some vocabulary in Catalan may be helpful if you visit Catalan-speaking areas. It's like Canada. If you visit Canada, English is most helpful even though French is the primary language of Quebec, However, if you plan to live in Quebec. French is nearly essential, and English is secondary. |
Welcome Hrobels. :)
One of my brothers lived in Mallorca for a long time. I am witness that some places in the island have been literally occupied by German people. So, I don't think people from your country is welcome in the island apart from hotelkeeper and people working in tourism sector. I've been in some towns that everything was written in German (neither Catalonian nor Spanish). Anyway, you're living in a bilingual region and everybody will speak Spanish with you if you tell them that you don't understand Mallorquín. I hope you're not angry with me because I've told you these things. That's not only my opinion, but many people think in this way. Sorry! ;) Welcome again. :) |
