I thought that...

I thought that...

Hola a todos:

¿Me podrían decir si así se traducen estas frases del inglés al español, por favor?

I thought you would win=Creí que ganarías (sí ganó)

En inglés para expresar esto hay casi un enfásis en el "thought".

I thought you would win=Creía/creí que ganarías (no ganó)
Y hay casi un enfásis en el "I".

Gracias

I would say - "Sí creía que ......"

The "Sí" is used as an intensifier.

Adding to Tacuba's suggestion:

Sabía que ganarías. -> ganó
Creí que ganarías. -> no ganó

For the ambiguous sentence, you can use: "estaba seguro de que ganarías", and the intonation, either enthusiastic or disappointed will show the meaning.

Thank you very much

Would it be like this?

Sí creía que ganarías (ganó/no ganó)
Creí que ganarías (no ganó)

If the person did win, the only option is "estaba seguro de/sí creía que ganarías," right?

Someone told me that if it did happen you would use "creí" and if it didn't you would use "creía." Is that not true?

Thank you

No.

¡Sí! ¡Sabía que ganarías! / ¡Estaba seguro de que ganarías! (With an enthusiastic intonation) -> Ganó

Creí que ganarías. / Estaba seguro de que ganarías. (With a disappointed intonation) -> No ganó

As for "creí"-"creía", "creía" doesn't sound natural to me, but maybe in some other region.

English translations:

Yes! I knew you would win! / I was sure that you would win! (enthusiastic) -> won
I thought you would win. / I was sure that you would win. (sad) -> didn't win

Thank you very much

Does anyone know if in Spain "creía que ganarías" (no ganó) would be common?

Thank you

Never use "creer" if the action is successful; you can say "suponer" or "imaginar" instead (with "ya"), or "saber", as it has been explained.

Ya suponía/ya me imaginaba que ganarías (and he won). :)

And yes, we use "creía/pensaba/estaba convencido de/hubiera jurado/etc. que ganarías" instead of "creí/pensé/etc." (and he didn't won). :)

Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you very much.
