Un ensayo: "Mi familia"
 

Otro ensayo de práctica. Tengo que escribir una descripción de una familia – su personalidad, sus ocupaciones, sus rutinas. (Estoy practicando para un curso que tomaré en Argentina este verano/invierno.) Voy a escribir sobre mi propia familia para practicar. Tengo que escribir al menos 125 palabras. ¡Las correcciones son bienvenidas!

Todos hemos crecido en Búfalo, NY. Mi madre todavía vive en Búfalo. Mi padre murió hace siete años. Solamente tengo un hermano. Su hogar está dos horas al este de Búfalo. Él tiene una esposa y tres hijos. Todos sus hijos son hombres. Yo vivo afuera del Washington, DC. Vivo alrededor de 8 horas desde Búfalo.

Mi madre siempre ha tenido muchos problemas médicos. A ella le gusta estar muy ocupada con muchas cosas para hacer. Ella piense que no estará deprimida si está muy ocupada. Hace muchos años ella era bibliotecaria en una escuela. Se jubiló hace dieciséis años. Y ahora, ella está a cargo de los libros donde vive. (Ella vive en un apartamento en una casa de retiro.) Todos los residentes allí leen muchos libros. Mi madre pasa mucho tiempo limpiar su apartamento, y ella le encanta hornear galletas y otras comidas ricas.

Mi hermano es policía, y su esposa es maestra. Sus hijos son jóvenes – asisten la escuela primaria. Los dos niños más pequeños son mellizos. Son pelirrojos. Todos los tres tienen personalidades muy diferentes. La familia le gusta vivir en el campo. (¡A mí, me gusta vivir cerca de una ciudad grande!) Y les gusta viajar a la playa de vacaciones. (A mí, me gusta viajar a las montañas o a otros países de vacaciones.)

Mi hermano y dos de sus hijos siempre son tranquilos. Mi hermano y uno de sus hijos son muy atléticos. Pero uno de los mellizos es un poco emocional. Y ambos de los mellizos no son muy atléticos. Pero ambos lo quieren ser atléticos.

Mi familia no está interesante. Pero son buenas personas, y me encanta estar con ellos cuando puedo.

I'll try not to deal with pure style issues to avoid confusion with "real" corrections, but be aware that, like in your first essay, there are too many pronouns. They are not wrong, but they make sentences innecessarily heavy.

• Could I have said that my brother “vive dos horas al este de …”? Would that sound better?
• Your comment about “alrededor” actually was something that I thought might be the case, but was having difficulty determining from the dictionary definition…
• Where you said that I wanted to replace the infinitive of “limpiar” with something that indicated continuous action, I was also not sure about that one. I have replaced it tentatively with the gerundio, but am not convinced that it’s correct.
• I have never heard the word “ellide” before… I can only find “elide” in my dictionary, and it indicates an omission or strike-out. Is that what you meant?
• My brother is a very calm person – I tell people that he’s very “even-keeled”. He’s also very athletic. So he’s both calm and athletic. And I was trying to connect those traits to certain of his sons as well.
• About the pronouns. I thought I was only using them when I wanted to either stress the subject of the sentence (in contrast to the previous thought) or if I thought the meaning might be unclear. So … I’m still using too many?

-- Yes, you are, but style will be polished with practice. :)

Same with punctuation marks. There are a few sentences that could have been grouped together, but then again, I'm not mixing style issues with language ones.
Still, although the strategy of short sentences is right (and the safest), make sure you're not separating the same idea by a period or a comma.

Now, about that one tricky idea... Let me explain in English what I mean. My brother has always been very athletic. Meaning that he has a natural intuition for any and all sports, doesn't have to convince himself to exercise (like his sister), enjoys all things that involve physical activity. He can pick up a new sport and is instantly good at it. Star baseball player, basketball player, golfer, touch football, downhill skiing, running, etc., etc., etc. His oldest son is the same way - he could hit a pitched baseball over the two-story house when he was two years old. He has been golfing with his father and grandfather for a couple of years now, and can hit from the same tee that they do and still sometimes win. He's only seven years old....

The twins like to exercise in that they are very active, run around like little bundles of energy, and have LOTS of metabolism. But they are both uncoordinated. Can't throw or catch a ball in any sport, can't hit a baseball, can't kick a soccer ball, can't run to keep up with someone else walking, etc. They try and try and try - they would LOVE to keep up with their older brother's athleticism, but they simply cannot. It gets rather frustrating for them both.

Is there a way to describe any of that succinctly in Spanish?

Ok, it's clear now.

You can say "mi hermano es muy bueno en los deportes" (he's good in sports). And to make a difference with the twins energy and their lack of skills, maybe something like "los mellizos tienen mucha energía, pero no tienen habilidad en los deportes" / "a los mellizos también les gustan los deportes pero no son tan buenos como su padre y su hermano"...
Try playing with that kind of sentences and you'll get a clear paragraph. :)

I know you love picking up new words! :) I just want to make sure that you know when some of these words aren't going to be recognized by relatively educated English-speakers in some regions.... :rose:

Ok... I've found what I don't like much of "son tranquilos". I think I would rather say "tienen carácter tranquilo", to underline a steady personality. :)

There's only one correction left and it will be alright.

And never mind about strange words, I'm used not to be understood in Spanish either. :D
