La última copa - The last glass

La última copa - The last glass

Well, I gave this song a try, but it's quite difficult to find a way for it to sound somehow "not to bad" in English, so I made a very literal translation. But I'd problems with this too. The idea is for English to be able speakers to hear and sing the song knowing what it means, nothing more. But if your translation seems to artficial as in this case...

The followings are just some points I want to remark, but this time I don't have specific questions, just what you want to quote is ok. At the end you can hear the song, sang by Gardel. Hope you enjoy it.

"La última copa" - "The last glass"

y jamás yo la podré olvidar;
yo me emborracho por ella
y ella quién sabe qué hará.
Eche, mozo, más champán,
que todo mi dolor,
bebiendo lo he de ahogar;

Just pour my friend, pour me and fill
until the border the champagne glass,
that this night of party and happiness
the pain that stays in my soul I want to drown.
Is the last party of my life,
of my life, boys, that goes...
or rather, it has gone behind that woman
that never knew how to appreciate my love.

I loved her, boys, and I love her / and I still do
and I'll never be able to forget her;
I get drunk for her
and who knows what she is doing now.
Pour, waiter, more champagne,
that all my pain,
drinking I'll drown;
and if you see her,
friends, say to her
that is because of her love
that my life is already gone.

Let's just drink a toast, the last glass,
that maybe she is also now
offering in some toast, her mouth
and another mouth will kiss it with joy.
Just pour my friend, pour me and fill
until the border the champagne glass,
that my life has gone behind that woman
that never knew how to appreciate my love.

Here is the song:

Just some suggestions.
¡Qué gran personaje es Gardel! Mi preferido canción de él es "Cambalache"

AngelicaDeAlquezar May 20, 2010 07:47 PM

Strange... I always thought Gardel never sang Cambalache.

Ookami?

ookami May 20, 2010 09:43 PM

Yes, Angelica is right, Gardel died before singing that song, so there is no recorded version.
But there are a lot of people that think that Gardel sang it.

Thanks for the corrections poli, I'll wait a little bit to correct the text.

Gardel has good songs, like "Caminito" or "Melodía de arrabal"
But the best is "Tomo y Obligo". I suppose it's too old for writer's rights

Tomo y obligo
Tango
1931
Música: Carlos Gardel
Letra: Manuel Romero

Tomo y obligo, mándese un trago,
que hoy necesito el recuerdo matar;

Cuántas veces de rodillas, tembloroso, yo me he hincado

Tomo y obligo, mándese un trago;
fuerza, canejo, sufra y no llore
que un hombre macho no debe llorar.

Mañana si tengo tiempo al traduzco....

Saludos :D

I drink because I must drink and then drink more to kill my sad memory.
Without a friend or job. I want this pain in my heart to stop. Come drink with me me and if now and then my voice falters when I sing, it's not because of this feeling of loss, I know that real men don't cry.

If the blades of pampas grass could talk, they would tell of how I loved her and of the fever in which I adored her. So many times I have returned to that tree and get down on my trembling knees--that leafless tree where on day I kissed her. Now I see my love has changed. When she walks with others , it's like a knife in my heart, and jealously blinds me beyond reason

I drink and drink more to all those women, but I tell you my friend they're
not worth your while. My experience should show you that. Take my advise never fall in love, but if you take the plunge, suffer you may, but don't cry becuase real men don't cry.

Traté de traducirlo. Tuvé problemas con "y le juro, todavía no consigo convencerme y ahí nomás no la maté":thinking:I tell you that if it weren't you to stop me, I'd kill her?:?:

And I swear to you, I still don't convince myself, (and) I didn't kill her right there.

@Poli: I think your translation is pretty good. Tangos have a million ways to express grudges. :D

I take and I push you to take another drink
because I must kill my bad memory today
Without a friend and far from my land
I need a ear where express my sadness.
Come drink with me me and if my
voice sometimes falters while singing,
I'm not crying because she's cheating me,
I know that a man should not cry.

If the fields could talk, this pampa
would tell you how I loved her, the fever in which I adored her.
So many times on my trembling knees
I was under that leafless tree where one day I kissed her.
Now I see her wicked and surrended in another arms
it's like a knife in my heart, and jealously blinds me beyond reason
And I swear to you, I still didn't know
how I managed to control myself and not kill her right there.

I take and I push you to take another drink,
it's better not to talk about women
all, my friend, give a bad payback
and my experience should prove you that.
Take my advise, never fall in love,
but if it turns out bad,
be brave, my friend, suffer and don't cry
because real men don't cry.

Lots of corrections are needed......
@ Angelica.... you women make us suffer of love :D :D
