I play music

I play music

While the literal translation would be, "Toco música".
Yet, doesn't sound too good to me. I.e., I'd say, "soy músico" (if in the context that's what it meant) and only would say "toco el piano" or "toco piano" or some specific instrument, if the reference is just to the activity (as a hobby, or in addition to the normal profession.) "Soy médico y toco el piano de oído" (Like my uncle, who was a doctor and would play piano and organ like nobody's business).

What the other "foreros" think about this?

In that context I would say that "toco música" is wrong, or at least... very strange. Maybe you can say "hago música", that's an option, but always when asking something as: "what do you do for living?" or something similar. In summary, I'm with you in what you have said. "Toco" is for instruments, more than for "music" as a whole. "Miguel es músico/hace música/vive de la música. Es bajista y toca muy bien el piano. El mes pasado tocaron en el Luna Park, llenandolo completamente. En su tiempo libre aprende a tocar otros instrumentos y hace música para publicidad."
But "toco" isn't just for hobby. You can be a professional musician that "toca el bajo". A person that "hace música" and not "toca música". What you can "tocar" are "songs".

Gracias Ookami, confirmas mi "feeling"... Y me recuerdas a Les Luthiers, con aquello que cantaban: "Aquí toco yo..., aquí toco yo..., aquí toco yo..., aquí tocaba yo..." :D
