Jamás de los jamases

Jamás de los jamases

Means never ever in English. Is this commonly used?

irmamar August 04, 2010 07:36 AM

Yes, it is commonly used in Spain (I can't tell you in other countries). It's like "nunca, jamás", but I believe that it's something popular, more than "nunca, jamás", which would be more formal. Although you could say "nunca, jamás de los jamases" (never, but never, never). :)

Yes, it's also commonly used in Mexico, also "nunca de los nuncas" and "nunca/jamás en la vida". :)

"Nunca de los nuncas" not here. Curious. :)

AngelicaDeAlquezar August 04, 2010 08:21 AM

We have here some kind of preference for "nunca"... "jamás" sounds more definitive and more "melodramatic" for us. :)

los jamases ... los nuncas? Not "las jamases ... las nuncas"? Really?

Those words that become nouns, like adverbs or adjectives or verbs turn into masculines. :)

El aullar de los lobos.
The howling of the wolves.

El naranja es mi color favorito.
Orange is my favourite colour.

Los "para siempres" que nunca se cumplen.
The "ever afters" that never come true.

¡Qué bárbara, Laepelba! Suenas como una amiga mía argentina que tenía en Barcelona. :applause:
Por cierto, ¿sabías que jamás viene del latín «iam magis» = ya más?
Su uso en frases negativas —«no lo hará ya más»— acabaría por darle valor negativo de por sí. :)
