Usando "haber + participle"...

Usando "haber + participle"...

(In #4 I was really not sure if it should be "estaba" or "estuve"... Please help me with that one in particular. Thanks!)

Muchas gracias!!

Those are correct, what I am not quite getting is the haber + participle part.

Are number 2 an3 correct?

laepelba August 07, 2010 04:01 PM

The concept being taught is that "haber + participio" is roughly equivalent to the English "having + past tense verb". Like "haber llegado" = "having arrived", etc...

#2 and #3!! I didn't even notice. Dang! Yes, I typed them exactly like they are in the book, and I never noticed that there's no "haber" in them. I think that my brain skipped that part because it was part of the exercise. I wonder if it was an error on the part of the book?

Do you think this would make more sense?

I can't believe I didn't notice that. Thanks!!

A couple other quick questions... (1) Why is #4 correct? (I really just guessed...) and (2) What does the "por" mean in #1, 4 and 8? For some reason those sound a bit strange to me.

Thanks again!

Por haber ganado = For having just won
Does that help?

aprobó

laepelba August 07, 2010 04:40 PM

Thanks, Rusty. I actually had aprobó written in my workbook, but because I'm typing on someone else's computer, they don't have the Spanish keyboard installed, and I keep forgetting the drop-down menu for accents...... Uyyy...

And with the "For having just won...", that's why it sounds kind of strange to me. I knew that's what it meant, but don't like the feel.... To ears that are used to speaking/hearing Spanish, do those sentences feel right?

Rusty August 07, 2010 06:15 PM

Yes, they feel right. I've heard and seen this structure a number of times.

Por haber dormido la siesta = By having had a nap

Does that help?

In this particular case it would mean "because of having..."

Rusty August 07, 2010 06:49 PM

True, that is the best translation, but I was trying to show that 'por' isn't always 'for'. I was going to write 'because of', but thought it too much of a leap. Thanks for taking the fall.

Yes - thanks to BOTH of you, both your re-wordings helped with #1 and #4. But in that sense, I think that my "fill in the blank" for #8 doesn't really work. Does it?

Also, why is #4 estaba instead of estuve?

Rusty August 07, 2010 08:16 PM

Using estaba in #4 does leave us hanging a bit, waiting for what else you had to say. With estuve, however, the story is over. Your choice - cliff hanger or el fin.

On #8, perhaps talking about being ready for the next test would be logical. Had #8 started with 'Al haber hecho', your suggestion might have worked better.

Wonderful! Thanks, you two! This is all quite helpful. ;)
