Que Digo
Hola,
Would like to understand when the phrases ¡Que Digo! and mejor dicho should be used. I read in my tutorial that they are used to "corregir lo que uno mismo dicho" This is confusing me, I thought these phrases mean "Well said" , something like an appreciation. Also ,what does "Pues a lo que ibamos" mean? I understand ibamos but not "Pues a lo que". To give you the complete sentence "Pues a lo que ibamos, Marta yo creo que la situación va a mejor mucho". Gracias, Raji |
I think you'll find it's "¿Qué digo?" - "What am I saying?". "He dicho a María José - ¿qué digo? - a José María, que ..."
"Mejor dicho" is "Better said". In my experience it's usually less a case of "better" and more a case of "What I just said was nonsense, ignore it". "Pues a lo que íbamos": Literally, "Well, to that which we were going". In other words, "Getting back on topic". |
¡Qué digo! can be used both as an exclamation and as an interrogation.
Voy a pintar la casa de blanco y la valla de verde. ¡Qué digo de verde! Quería decir de azul. :) |
I have a conversation like this
Lulu : Pues a lo que ibamos,Leela,yo creo que la situación emperesarial en Hispanoamérica va a mejorar mucho Leela:Bueno, supongo,¡qué Digo!,sé que tienes razón So this is what I interpret, let me know if this is correct Lulu : Coming back to the topic,Leela, I think that the industrial situation in LatinAmerica is going to improve a lot. Leela:Well,I suppose,Well said!,I know you are right (Not sure of this sentence) |
"ABC ¡qué digo! DEF" means "
"¿Qué dije?" is about the same but including astonishment for what was said before (something remarkably silly, confusing or remarkably wrong) "ABC, mejor dicho, DEF" means "ABC, mejor dicho, DEF" (DEF is a better than ABD conveying an exact notion) "... . A lo que íbamos, ..." means the end of an aside or digression, calling to resume the main topic. |
Empresarial is "or of relating to business", not limited to industry.

I'm going more with Irmamar's answer, you can use that phrase as exclamation of some phrase made for you, or maybe if you have said something with an expression of admiration.
Sincerely yours. |
Yes, Irmamar is right, but so are Pjt33 and Alec... and Poli, ¡qué digo! (perdón) Poli no ha escrito nada todavía en este thread...
(I.e., I made a mistake mentioning "Poli" so I literally say "what am I saying?" "I put my foot in my mouth" "sorry" "I meant to say...") Or "mejor dicho", (better said) the above forum member contributions are all okay... from my viewpoint. "Desde mi punto de vista, o mejor dicho, desde mi humilde punto de vista" (From my viewpoint, or rather, from my humble viewpoint) |

What is the significance of "i" added to "que", though, as in "ique"? |
It's not an "i", but an exclamation mark: "¡": ¡Qué...!

¿Por que no pensé en eso? ¿Por que no se me ocurrió? Saludos |
