Do you think the US should change to the metric system?


I think we shouldn't, it would cost a lot of $, changing the signs, textbooks etc.

Sí. It should have been done a long time ago but it's never to late to correct a mistake.
Don't get me wrong, I would hate it but it needs to happen sooner or later.

It has costs to become a part of the World.

Not I believe that the metric system is very exact and well I wouldn't suggest the change of the metric system nowadays, already the mathematics are definite for the currently system metric.

I don't believe necessary to change the system right now.

But how much money is currently lost by using a different system to the rest of the world? Would changing promote trade and boost your economy?

I'm glad that I don't have to make the decision to go metric. I can't decide. In some ways, I agree with pjt33 that it would be a boost to our economy and facilitate trade, and, I agree with Dale that it is long overdue. But like with any change of this magnitude, lives will be lost through negligence and error during the transition. And, as Jessica mentioned, the cost alone might not be worth the effort, economically, in the long run. :thinking:

Literally the metric system works nowadays, and as you have told us before, if the government change the metric system that could cause a great loss monetarily speaking it.

Then I don't believe necessary to changes the system in this new world, it is working now worldwide.

It's was my humble commentary about it.

Sí Angela, pero EEUU es uno de los muy pocos paises en el mundo que no usa el sistema métrica. Tambien permanecemos con farenheit por medir temperatura. Parece raro que no conformamos a esas normas internacionales.

Well, I agree it is not easy to do. I believe "they" have been talking about changing to "metric" for 70 years... or more...
Many Cook books (recipes) have both systems noted... and many a tape measure (if not all) have both inches and centimeters...

For sake of simplicity I'd go for the metric, any day of the week, but then again, if you have worked in construction in the US, you cannot deal with things if it is not with inches... and 43 inches and 7/16ths... or whatever is the exact measure...

When I use a professional microphone to record something I have my mouth at 6 or 7 inches away from it... (don't ask me how many centimeters... I guess something on the order of 15 to 17 1/2 cms?) But it wouldn't take much to get used to it... as long as there is a "transition" period where everybody gets fully acquainted...

I make up my mind... I vote "yes"... (And God have pity of me!) :)

You will have to change. We changed to euro some years ago.

if we change, we will have to change all the signs that say the speed limit, change all the textbooks that use the English system. we should just stick with the English system since most people are used to that

Your guess is spot on. But in English you have pity on someone.

Three countries use variants on the Imperial system, and the UK uses a mix of Imperial and metric.

On some points I say yes and on some I say no. I mean I really don't care either way because the metric system is pretty easy to understand and we in the USA do have to use it all the time. Ever work on a vehicle? Depending on what car you have you will have to have a set of SAE wrenches and metric. So every tool you get you have to get the metric and SAE. But then again the industry that I work in is all SAE and would be a pain to convert to metric. The spacing on the framing wouldn't be so difficult but all the nuts are SAE and then we would have to have multiple tools and we don't have a lot of space to put them.

So really it cost money to not convert and it cost money to go ahead and convert. As far as learning goes, if you can learn standard then you should have no trouble learning metric.
