Please, check this sentence

I'm not sure if the syntax is correct:

The Parliamentarians under Cromwell ended the war in August with a victory over the Scots (the Battle of Preston).
Thanks. :)

Rusty October 31, 2010 01:56 PM

It seems fine to me.

irmamar October 31, 2010 02:07 PM

I wasn't sure where placing 'in August'. But if you tell me that it is correct, it must be. Thanks a lot. :):rose:

Además, yo pondría "(in the Battle of Preston)". No puedo explicar por qué.

laepelba October 31, 2010 04:28 PM

Yeah - what they said. The sentence in your original question is great. :)

wafflestomp October 31, 2010 09:36 PM

Looks just fine. As for pj's correction of chileno's sentence, I think that saying "sure of" is fine, though just saying sure works as well.

pjt33 November 01, 2010 02:41 AM

Maybe it's a dialectal variation. I'm not sure what my internalised rule is, but I suspect it's

sure of + NOUN PHRASE
sure + VERB PHRASE

E.g.
I'm sure of it.
I'm not completely sure of his trustworthiness.
I'm sure he'll do it.
I'm not sure when I can come.

If it's a dialectical variation, then it's my dialect as well.

irmamar November 01, 2010 06:29 AM

The question was about the first sentence . But thanks for the help with the second. :D

JPablo November 08, 2010 09:56 AM

We sure learned something from it!
By the way, if you want to practice and learn, the film on Cromwell is rather edifying. (I saw it more than 20 years ago, but I think Perikles would approve it...)

Thanks for the link. :) Although I don't know when I'll have enough time to watch the film and/or if I'll find it. :D

Well... at least you can see the pictures and see how the worked to make sure the characters were pretty close to the original guys... I mean, lords and commoners...

irmamar November 10, 2010 03:13 AM

Thank you, Pablín. :)

JPablo November 11, 2010 01:11 PM
