I agree. It is more common to use "I would prefer...." in this scenario.

Hang on - the question was whether the sentences were grammatically correct, which they are. The "I would prefer...." is also correct, but is a different situation, and we don't know what that is.

Oddly, I have just used the sentence myself. There is an issue whether we go to some function on Saturday night. My wife is going, and I am not, and I just explained to friend that 'I prefer not to go out that night'

This is just a spelling difference between BrE and AmE. It means exactly the same. :)
