Buenaaas...
I'm Antonio, and I'm from (and live) in Spain.
I've been using tomisimo.org for a while and just today I noticed the forums.

Re: Best way to say "pop"
That's correct. "Refresco" is the generic term (no "soda" in Spain), but you usually go with the brand.
And it can be really funny when you hear someone ask for a "esprite" or a "siete u pé" ;)

Not in Spain. We use only the "radio de la rueda" expression here.

Re: Dealing with accent marks
I've found that in several keyboards AltGr+4 and a space inserts a "~". If instead of a space I press "n", I get a "ñ".
I have accents and Ñs, even çs, in my keyboard, but no ~ :P

Re: walking back
Careful, "al", not "el". "al" is a contraction of "a el" (to the).
I'd say "Estábamos volviendo al centro comercial" or "Íbamos de vuelta al centro comercial".
"Mall" is not used here.

Re: getting started
A more colloquial expresion is "ponerse en marcha".
Usually it's easier to determine the best expression with some context.

Re: How to say "Given name"
Never "primer nombre". At least in Spain.
"Nombre de pila" is the only expression I've used. "pila" refers to the water recipient of a catholic baptism ceremony.
