Mi familia
Thanks to everyone who helped out with my last assessment. In this a assessment I have to write a email to my friend about my family. This is what I've got so far. If people could proof read it and correct it, it would be much appreciated. Thank you

You may want to check out the verb "gustar" more thoroughly, and pay attention to what meanings are expressed by the subject and by the indirect object. A hint: "to like" will lead you astray. |

![]() Pinosilano pointed out the difference between having a fish and eating a fish. You'll still need to make that change. And I noticed a couple of things are still not changed that were mentioned earlier, like después de eso. The verb gustar isn't used like the English verb 'like'. Instead of the subject-verb-direct object we use in English, the Spanish construct is indirect object-verb-subject (the subject may be written left of the indirect object, if you'd prefer). In order to make this word order work in your English-wired brain, you need to assign a new meaning to the verb gustar. Instead of 'like', you should use 'is pleasing'. This way, the English 'I like apples' can be rephrased to 'Apples are pleasing to me', which is the same structure used in Spanish. Me gustan las manzanas. = I like apples. (Apples are pleasing to me.) Me (to me - indirect object) gustan ((they, the apples) are pleasing - verb) las manzanas (the apples - subject) Now, applying this same structure to your sentence, 'We liked them (the meals)' can be rephrased to 'They (the meals) were pleasing to us'. The English direct object became the Spanish subject. The English subject became the Spanish indirect object. The English verb needed to be rephrased to make it sound right. The subject 'they' won't need to be translated, because it is understood. (You could translate 'the meals', if you'd like to have a subject.) Nos gustaron. = We liked them. (They (the meals) were pleasing to us.) Nos (to us - indirect object) gustaron ((they (the meals) were pleasing - verb) - (they (the meals) - subject - omitted) With this explanation, you should now be able to better understand what wrholt meant when he said 'nos gustamos' is reflexive. The subject conveyed by the verb ending is the same person as the indirect object. Nos gustamos. = We liked ourselves. (We were pleasing to ourselves.) nos (to us - indirect object) gustamos (we were pleasing - verb) Last edited by Rusty; November 08, 2011 at 12:27 PM. Reason: made more clear |

Right, I can see where I was going wrong now. This is what I've got now after all the corrections so far.

Good job!
![]() Two more changes: ... de hacer cosas juntos. (You had this right in your original post.) quedarse en casa = to stay at home You may want to look at all the suggestions pinosilano offered. Some would be good to incorporate so the story flows a bit better. ![]() |

Definitely. I feel much stronger with conjugating verbs, especially 'gustar'. And it's all adding to my vocabulary. The more I can learn before I got to Peru, and the more confident I can be in developing sentences the better.
