Esclusa y compuerta
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre esclusa y compuerta? Imagino que una esclusa es para permitir el flujo de agua (como el inglés "sluice gate" o "spillway", mientras que una compuerta es una barrera (como el inglés "lock" o "flood gate",

A reserva de que alguien que sepa mejor tenga una mejor opinión, yo diría que "esclusa" es un depósito que se llena y se vacía de agua y la compuerta permite o impide el acceso del agua.

De acuerdo. compuerta = gate esclusa = lock
The gate keeps the water in/out of the lock.

I agree as well. I only add that one can read or hear "abrir las esclusas" which of course refers to opening the gates (compuertas) of the lock (esclusa).
But I also believe native Spanish speakers tend to confuse both terms, and use them in a synonym way, and so a "esclusa" at a dam, is a 'floodgate' or 'sluicegate', in a channel, like the Panama channel, it is definitely a lock.
