I believe I've heard both used. However, more people tend to use 'era'. So, I agree with Tomísimo, but would be interested to know which usage rule is being invoked.

Both are OK and understandable, but I would use era. I need the complete context.
For example, you can use fue with;

La primera canción del concierto fue "Kathy's song"

La frase original era "Yesterday, I went to the store."
La frase original fue "Yesterday, I went to the store."
Lo que quise decir fue que "Yesterday, I went to the store."
Lo que quería decir era "Yesterday, I went to the store."

All are OK, but depending on the context. Saying "original", you're denoting?? change, so it's more usual to use "era", because "fue" it's more for "one-moment-in-time" events.

La frase original era "Yesterday, I went to the store.", luego se cambió por "XXXXXXXXXXX"
La frase original para abrir un discurso era "Yesterday, I went to the store.", luego dejó de usarse

La frase inicial de Marther Luther King fue "Yesterday, I had a dream."
La frase inicial de Julio César en "Comentarios sobre la guerra de las Galias" es/fue "la Galia está dividida en tres partes"

But usually you can use fue/era without problem. This is only to make your "gramatica" more accurate.

Yes, but it's your former idea. You have not read the story, but because of other things (a friend's comment, earful, author's significance) you thought it was good. later you read it and it wasn't good

pensé que era un cuento muy interesante, pero no lo fue (, but is better with era, don't ask me why, it sounds better.)

You begin to read, and find it good (good atmosphere, good topic, nice characters) . Later, it dissapoint you (bad ending, author not capable of doing it good).

but...
pensé que iba a ser un concierto muy bueno, pero no lo era (, but sounds bad)
pensé que iba a ser un concierto muy bueno, pero no lo fue

perhaps it's because in the first one (reading and changing your mind) it's more common, and the concert it's supossed to be "one-time"
