Prófugo

Is this the most common term form a deserter (as in the military) or is
desertor the preferred term.

"Desertor" is a military person that leaves the Armed Forces without intention to return.

"Prófugo" is a criminal who is at large. "Prófugo de la justicia".

This is in Colombia.

"Desertor" is a person who abandons a cause or organization usually without right.
"Prófugo" is someone hard to find, capture, or isolate.
Sometimes deserter and fugitive are used as synonyms.
