¿Se le dio el puesto oficialmente?
¿Consiguió el puesto de forma permanente? Not totally sure, if the meaning you mention is as you say, I'd say something like the above... In trying to clear the English for myself, I find the sense of "exempting something or someone from new legislation, restrictions or requirements" for "grandfather" as a verb... Maybe a bit more context will help to find a better or more fitting translation...

The only thing about grandfathering-in that I managed to find refers to exceptions to new regulations made on old buildings or businesses. I looked for examples containing "she was grandfathered in" and all can be translated as "fue exceptuada" or "fue acogida/se acogió", but nothing like your example. Anyway, just by context I would say "se le dio preeminencia para el empleo" if the position was unofficial but it was later officially created, or, as we say here, "se la puso en blanco" (as opposed to "estar en negro") if the she was doing the job avoiding labour regulations and they decided to regularize that contract.

Well, let me see if I can clarify this.
Let's say that, for the sake of clarification, that a group of people are working for a community agency. They are not represented by a union. Then all of a sudden this group of people are represented by a union and they have to be placed within a job classification that is represented by the union. Once they find a place for this group of people, their job title and description changes and they are immersed into this job title where other people are already in but these late-comers are "grand-fathered" into the position. ___________________OR_____________________ Let's say that...... Maria works as secretary for a doctor and she also interprets for this doctor when Russian-speaking patients come in to see him. This medical office does not have interpreters. 3 years later, the medical office decides to hire some interpreters and create an Interpreter Dept. Maria is called to see if she wants to join this department since she already has been doing it for 3 years. She does not have to take the test or do anything because she has been doing it already so she is "grand-fathered" in.

Grandfather clause...
A provision in a statute that exempts those already involved in a regulated activity or business from the new regulations established by the statute. a clause in legislation that forbids or regulates an activity so that those engaged in it are exempted from the ban

Well, yes, "servicio pasado", but I also thought of, "por veteranía" (experience, seniority)
Also: "María consiguió el puesto por derechos de antigüedad" or "por estar más alta en el escalafón" ("for being up the ladder") (not sure if this is how you say this in English) "To go up the ladder" = "ascender en el escalafón".

About the secretary, we'd say here "se la regularizó" in a matter of new regulation (and I'm not referring to "se la blanqueó") and "se le dio prioridad para el puesto (por ocuparse ya de la tarea)" in the case of your example. About the definition, as I said above.
