I was waiting =

estaba esperando, in the past, of course the action has ended, but you are talking about something about going on at that time.

estuve esperando, also in the past so the action is ended, thing is that you are talking about whatever that ended at that time.

Chile is right but examples are needed. There preterite and imperfect are a big problem for students.

Etuve esperándote cuando llego una tempestad que tumbó el arbol.

Estaba esperando tu llamada todo el día[/CODE]

I believe when you have a 2 part action and the 2nd action interrupts the first the 1st action has to be in the imperfect...that is what I was always taught
