Leí en un periódico lo siguiente: En castellano risueño y solvente (el nieto de Heminguay) Es decir: laughingly and fluently.
¿Es comun decir: hablas un español/inglés solvente? -- o es un uso
estilístico de escritor?

Me imagino que cheerful and competent sería una traducción buena de esas palabras. No pude encontrar en internet ni un ejemplo de castellano solvente, o español solvente con el mismo sentido que has puesto.

Sí encontré algunos ejemplos de idioma + solvente.

• En castellano risueño y solvente, el descendiente del autor de Fiesta asegura haber "flipado" con el peligroso encierro del lunes.
• Busco ser cuatrilingue (Galego (materno), Español (materno), Ingles (solvente), Japones (poco pero muy friki).
• Llévate eso y alguna fotocopia de un diccionario de nombres en inglés solvente (el de Oxford, por ejemplo), donde quede claro que Leo es la forma de León en esa lengua.
• ... pero me lié tratando de traducir a un inglés solvente ...
• ... toda clase de normas jurídicas, reglamentos, instrucciones, impresos y otros tipos de escritos, que deberían ser siempre redactados no sólo en español (sin perjuicio de que se redacten también en una lengua territorial), sino en un español solvente.

Creo que una buena traducción de solvente sería competent, como dice Rusty. Otras opciones: clear, understandable, normal, standard etc.

Yes, I think your translations are correct as mine was using fluent, but I think it seems like a rare usage reflecting the writer's style. I'm not sure, however. David, congratulations finding the link!

I think fluent is also a valid translation.

Another option for risueño could be good-humored.

I think here the "solvente" is "good enough", but not "fluent"
"Fluent" is "dominio del idioma".

Creo que estas traducciones captan el significado, pero no el sentido. Castellano solvente no es una expresión habitual. Habría que encontrar en inglés una traducción que sea igualmente inusual. Solvente es la persona que tiene dinero para pagar algo. Al aplicar solvente a un sustantivo con el que habitualmente no aparece, se está forzando la capacidad expresiva del idioma.

Es una manera moderna (slang) de decir raro.

As Alfonso says, solvente is an economic term (somebody is able to pay) and in this context (forced, Alfonso's right), it's Elaina's "enough to get by."

Japonés (poco pero muy friki) here means "I know Japanese, not much but the freak part"
They don't know proper Japanese, but they know a lot of terms used in anime, manga and samurai movies and minor expresions (welcome, the numbers, good by) and a lot of strange japanese behaviours/customs
That's because In Japanese, I'm also "no mucho, pero muy friki"

Yes, Alfonso, I'm agreed with you, solvente's when a persona has money for pay somthing, and that word is used as solvente of some liquid.


But, people, I think, what the word SOLVENTE, it can use in a lot sentences depending of the meaning of the sentence what you can to say it.

What exactly do you mean when you say español pasable? When I say in passable Spanish, it means that the person can speak it good enough to be understood and to express most things they will want to say.
