Spoken slowly, basic dialogue, short sentences, simple stories/plots.

Of course, this is meant for 2 to 3 year old children

But that is really where a "Spanish 1" student's comprehension is.

I'm thankfully beyond this level now, but it might have been helpful a year ago.
