Thank you for the plethora of translations (did I say that right? - just learned plethora!) Rusty, I like "palabras claves" the best

I'd use:
He needs to practice his sight words. Necesita practicar su lectura, para poder reconocer palabras a simple vista sin necesidad de pronunciarlas sílaba por sílaba. I know that's a long translation, but that's pretty much the only way to translate the meaning of the sentence in English.
