"way"

Aloha (buenas), as I watch my favorite telenovela "Tierra de Pasiones" the camposina girl uses very colorful language such as "way" which according to the closed captioning means "dude." Now my experience growing up was that "way" was used as a swear word in conjunction with other swear words which I will leave to your imagination. So what's the scoop on this word? would I use it with my friends or was I right as a kid by not saying it? Any other "Tierra de Pasiones" fans out there? I met and had my picture taken recently with Gabby Spanic.

Re: "way"

I can't help you out much, I've never seen Tierra de Pasiones, but as far as I know güey (I'm not sure about the spelling) means a lot more than "dude". In Mexico, it's used by a lot of people, and is probably as common as saying "dude", but as far as I know it's more vulgar.

Re: "way"

I just found this, one guy's take on the word guey. Pretty informative.

David, that article was fantastic. Just as I thought, a low-class derogatory word (thanks for the spelling) that is now crossing over into everyday speech. The female character's use of it on 'Tierra de Pasiones' is fitting her role. The novela finishes up next week. You should catch the finale on Telemundo.

Re: "way"

For some reason, I never was one to watch a lot of TV, but I'll see. It is a good way to learn some Spanish that's for sure.
