			In Mexico, there seem to be quite a few "universidades autónomas" and I get the feeling that this means that in spite of receiving government funding, they are autonomous (independent) self-governing institutions (not run directly by the gov't).

			Welcome, Tabbykat.  There are several "universidades autónomas" in Spain, too. I guess they took its name because the universitary self-government. Anyway, the public Universities here have self-government, although not all of them are called "autónomas". I don't know the reason     |
