Ejercicio 19-24

Este es un ejercicio de traducción. Tengo dudas acerca de tres de las oraciónes:

2) Inglés: I do not like to wear sandals.
Mi traducción: No me gusta llevar las sandalias.
La respuesta en el libro: No me gusta usar sandalias.
Mis dudas: (1) ¿Está bien el uso de "llevar" aquí? (2) ¿Es importa el uso de "las"?

6) Inglés: They like to practice the piano late at night.
Mi traducción: Les gusta practicar el piano tarde de noche.
La respuesta en el libro: Les gusta practica el piano tarde por la noche.
Mi duda: ¿Mi respuesta está bien también?

7) Inglés: Does Frank like to play chess?
Mi traducción: ¿A Frank, le gusta jugar al ajedrez?
La respuesta en el libro: ¿Le gusta jugar al ajedrez a Frank?
Mi duda: ¿Mi respuesta está bien también?

Para mi gusto está bien la respuesta del libro. A no ser que la respuestatuya fuera "No me gusta llevar (las) sandalias puestas. Aún así, me gusta más la respuesta del libro.

#2 - I don't really follow your response. I DO understand that you like the book's answer better. But what, exactly, is wrong with mine?

#6 - I see that the book's answer is , but what about my original answer?

#7 - Doh! I wrote it in my book without the comma. Yeah.

We've talked about this before: "llevar (puesta) una prenda de ropa", when you're talking about wearing clothes, is not so widely used as to "usar" (maybe in other countries). If you want to use it, it would be understood, but other people will be likely to say different things.
(2) ¿Es importa el uso de "las"? Either "es importante" or "importa".
Sí, sí importa. The use of "las" implies you already know which sandals you're talking about.

6) Inglés: They like to practice the piano late at night.
Mi traducción: Les gusta practicar el piano tarde de noche.
La respuesta en el libro: Les gusta practica el piano tarde por la noche.
Mi duda: ¿Mi respuesta está bien también?
"Tarde en la noche" would be daily speech in Mexico ("por la noche" rather belongs to educated speech).
"De noche" is used in expressions like "ya es de noche" (it's night already), "un vestido de noche" (a night dress), "salimos de noche" (we went out at night", but I cannot actually tell why "tarde de noche" sounds awkward.


7) Inglés: Does Frank like to play chess?
Mi traducción: ¿A Frank (no comma... if there is no comma in English, it's even less justified in Spanish) le gusta jugar al ajedrez?
La respuesta en el libro: ¿Le gusta jugar al ajedrez a Frank?
Mi duda: ¿Mi respuesta está bien también? Sí.

@Lou Ann: Check your rules for accents. Words that end with "-ión" need an accent because they're "agudas". Their plural make them "graves", so they do not need an accent.

I even thought about that when I was typing it ("No accent here, Lou Ann.") I am honestly surprised to see that accent there, because I KNOW not to use it there. And I've made the same mistake in another similar word recently......... Argh!!!

Sí, sí importa. (<--I knew that...) The use of "las" implies you already know which sandals you're talking about.<-- in the same exercise, they had a sentence like this: "My friend Caterina likes red shoes" and the translation was "A mi amiga Caterina le gusta gustan los zapatos rojos". ???

Different sentence structure.
- A mi amiga C. le gustan los zapatos rojos.
- A mi amiga C. le gusta comprar zapatos rojos.


Definite or indefinite articles are needed most of the time, but there are verbs and situations when they aren't.

- Experts say the world will come to an end on 2012.
Expertos dicen que el mundo se va a acabar en el 2012. (This is wrong, despite the fact that many media are using this kind of formulas often lately... must be English influence.)
Algunos expertos dicen que el mundo se va a acabar en 2012. (Some of the experts in strange sciences, it's understood)
Los/unos expertos de la Universidad de Miskatonic dicen que el mundo se va a acabar en 2012. (Specific experts)

- I can't eat strawberries.
No puedo comer fresas.
No puedo comer las fresas. (Which strawberries? The ones I see in my plate, those we have talked about because they haven't been dissinfected... the one you're talking to must know which strawberries you're talking about)
No puedo comer unas fresas. (This would make no sense, unless you're saying you can't eat just some, but you'd have to eat them all in the plate)

- Excuse me, do you sell newspapers?
Disculpe, ¿vende periódicos?
Disculpe, ¿vende los periódicos? (Which newspapers?)
Disculpe, ¿vende unos periódicos? (Some from among this stack maybe)

- They make chairs here.
Aquí hacen sillas.
Aquí hacen las sillas. (Those you already know)
Aquí hacen unas sillas. (Here they make some of the chairs, the others are made somewhere else)

#2 is ambiguous and it can be used as you liking carrying sandals, in your hands, backpack etc... I told you that when we use it with llevar we use "llevar puesto/a algo" But there is no way to get ambiguous if you say I like to use/wear sandals.
