Numerical grades to letter grades

I think I understand the basic conversion, but in a Mexican school transcript I'm working on there appears the entry Promedio General de Aprovechamiento (which I take to mean Grade Point Average) of 8.9 so I'm wondering how to translate that number accurately into understandable English. On the other hand, among the list of courses with their corresponding number grades I'm seeing the letter A following each entry of Actividad Paraescolar, so what does A mean here? Many thanks!

"Aprovechamiento" is the performance of the student, and the expectation is that it will show up in good grades.

This "Promedio general" can be the average from all the marks the student had at the end of the course in all subjects (Mathematics, Spanish, Sciences, History... whatever), or the average the student got from all the grades all over the course in one specific subject.


Our grades should go from 0 to 10, and in some tests and evaluations during a course, these are the notes the students get. However, when it comes to official grades at the end of the year, marks only go from 5 to 10.

5 - Fail
6 - Barely made it
7 - Good enough
8 - Good
9 - Very good
10 - Excellent


And that "A" is probably "aprobado" (meaning that the student succeeded in their activities), in opposition to "no aprobado" (failed).

Ah, thanks. Now I'm humbled, just imagining I knew the conversion to letter grades when there are actually 6 numbers!

But seriously, it's very hard to make an equivalence of grades between one country and another... these conversions are usually made through official agreements between institutions... (I have just been told that there might be a governmental standard on this.)

A long time ago, when I was in a French highschool, we had twenty points to get our grades instead of 10. The agreement between both systems was that the French 8 was Mexican 5, and French 18 was already Mexican 10. Very few of my classmates had to worry about what to do with 19 and 20, but it was a relief for most of us that 10/20 was not 5/10.

Right, and that goes to confirm the opinion of others I asked. Now about the question of 8.9 for Promedio General de Aprovechamiento I might say "Average of all Grades: between C+ and B-"
