"In the public domain" sería correcto pero hoy en día, para mí al menos, tiene connotaciones fuertes de "estar libre de copyright".

It depends. As pjt says, 'public knowledge' is any information which is supposed to be secret (on the level of e.g. some film star is pregnant). 'Public domain' has a legal significance - you can download 'public domain' software without breaking the law.

I know about software being in the public domain.

What I am asking is if instead of being public knowledge, use of public domain.
