Question Lo siento

Escribí un email hace dos o tres semanas. Después, una amiga peruana me dio algunas correcciones.

Una frase que escribí: "Lo siento que no les contesté a ustedes anteriormente."

Mi amiga me dijo que no se usa "lo" aquí. ??

¿Porqué? ¿Qué es la frase correcta?

¡Gracias!

It seems your friends don't see the reason for "I'm sorry" They changed the meaning to ""I feel that I haven't..."
Your use of "lo siento" works for me because I'm Anglo, but in this case
an apology may be better communicated with disculpar. "Discúlpanme
por no contestarles antes..."

Wait for native speakers to confirm this.

"Siento que no les contesté a ustedes anteriormente."

"Lo siento."

- "Lo siento"
- ¿Qué?
- "Que no les contesté a ustedes anteriormente."

"Lo siento que no les contesté a ustedes anteriormente." = "Lo^2 siento" = "Siento que (no les contesté a ustedes anteriormente)^2."

So you're saying that my original sentence was incorrectly redundant...?

Yes. (Although redundant use of a pronoun for which the object noun is also supplied isn't always wrong - I have a vague intuition for when it's right, but not enough to give you a rule).

Adding to what has been said.

Lo siento por no haberte/haberle/haberles contestado anteriormente.
Lo siento por no contestar anteriormente.

Are correct.

Oh! So the difference is the "por" vs. "que"?

I think so.

I am going to use alec's format, which to me should have been for this other type of question.

Lo siento. (I feel/I think)

¿Qué?

Que no les contesté ...

To me, it should have been

Lo siento (I am sorry)

Por qué?

Por(que) no ... (Because/by not)

Hmmm.... it doesn't to me like you are both saying the same thing.....

"Lo siento por..." (someone) - I feel sorry for someone....
"Siento que..." (conjugated verb) - I'm sorry that (conjugated verb)

Or no?

Alec, una lástima que no te pueda rebatir gramaticalmente, pero no hay algo que no me cuadra con lo que dices... :/

Siéntete libre de buscar gramáticas, literatura y ejemplos en los amplios dominios de la web. Especialmente en cómo influyen dos usos de un adjetivo inglés en la gramática aplicada a una sola acepción de un verbo castellano (5- lamentar, tener por doloroso y malo algo), no sólo en preposiciones sino con pronombres átonos.

It's much simpler

If "Lo siento que no les contesté anteriormente" or "Lo siento por no haberles contestado anteriormente" are right, what does "lo" mean and what does "por" add? What is the difference with "Siento que no les contesté anteriormente" or "Siento no haberles contestado anteriormente"?

Like Poli said, there is a difference between an apology ("Discúlpenme") and the expression of pity or regret ("Siento <nominal phrase>" or "Lo siento (adverb)". But I don't doubt that a lot of fellows use "lo siento que hice tal o cual cosa" which is a wishy-washy form of some regret like "sé que hice tal o cual cosa y lo siento" or an apology with a twist, like a popular way to say "my sincere apology". Like a professor of mine used to say: "lo siento, lo siento ... lo siento en la silla" as "lo" wasn't much heartfelt.

AHHHHhhhhhh!!!! Gotcha! So, "lo siento" standing alone in general, is not necessarily a great apology... "disculpa(en)me" is better...

Siento que no contesté anteriormente se confunde con "Pienso que no contesté anteriormente"

Siento no haber contestado anteriormente estaría mejor.

Por supuesto que "disculpen" o "lamento no haber..." está bien también.
