Side note for learners: "perder la vergüenza" is often used to say that someone has lost all kind of consideration for others and does things in a brazen way, or that he/she has lost respect for him/herself.

To learn to speak a language well, you need to overcome your fears and just start speaking.

Personally, I think in this context, la vergüenza is best translated as shyness. As a very shy person myself, this is exactly what I try to overcome to speak a language I am learning.
