¿Mejor o peor? Eso ya nunca lo sabremos.

What does "liberaba también la escritura de Shirley" mean? Gave the opportunity to write freely any time (escritura=process of writing, not what is being written)?

The context makes me think that she obtained/got the opportunity to write freely any time she wanted (without having to wait to get access to the typewriter), but she didn't use that opportunity and kept writing the way she did before.

Is it why the author used "liberaba" instead of "liberó" to indicate that she didn't use that opportunity?

Thank you.

Imperfecto is used because the start and end of the action doesn't matter

Being the typewriter now free she was free to use it to her own ends. The fact that she wasn't using it until her stories were way developed speaks about her being rigid, or trapped in a rut, or too psychologically attached to conservative gender roles.

It's subjunctive the mode that hints the action wasn't performed. But here we have indicative with the aspect called imperfect, and we use it both with what is done and what isn't.
