(Still working on my accents, as my limited Spanish experience is almost entirely in speaking; therefore, both my grammar and writing (e.g. knowing where accents are) are both pretty poor at the moment).

Well, they're known as false cognates, falsos amigos. They're similar words in different languages with a different meaning. It's so easy to fall in a trap like this!

Oye is cuban slang for Hello or "hey." Por ejemplo.....

Bueno si está en una taverna y quiere pedir la cuenta o otra tapa o caña más y la música está amplificada ¿no dices "oye" para llamar la atención del camarero en un sitio así? Si no, ¿cual es la palabra mejor llamar atención sin parecer maleducado?

Entre caribeños (cubanos incluidos) se oye "oye" mucho. Se nota que parece muy familiar, pero entre amigos es común.

Me parece que esa palabra cambia mucho con el tono que la usa cuando la dice.

Si te veo por un pasillo, a lo lejos, te llamaré: "¡oye, Poli!". Pero si te digo: "oye, tú", no suena tan bien. No sé, depende del contexto y el tono en que lo digas. Al verlo escrito aquí, en el foro, no lo veía bien, no sabía que en otros países era normal.

Yes, I have used that terms sometimes, but I don't believe it sound bad. For instance.

I'm going to restaurant. I can't call to the waiter Hey tu ven ( Hey you come here), This way sound less lovable and less polite.

But anyhow I call to the waiter, Disculpe podria tomar mi orden ( Mr. May you take my order please?) This way sound more polite than the first one.


I feel this depending of the education of the person, in fact this is more about culture than of idioms or countries.

In fact I remember in Mexico the people is less polite than other countries.

welcome .. I just want to tell you something in mexico the word that you use in mexico has two traductions, ( for) the meaning is por and para all depend on the verb or sentences.
