Can we use free in this context? Or just a turn of phrase?

I would use "to free up" or "to release".

Me liberaron de dos grupos.
They freed me up from teaching two classes.
They released me from teaching two classes.


(Remember that "class" = curso o grupo, y no "clase", la cual sería "session")
