that that is the only meaning of the word. Although I agree that the situation you mentioned can be called a reconciliation, the settling of a dispute doesn't always imply that the parties once agreed on what is disputed. It simply means that there was a process whereby the two have become agreeable, or compatible, and the dispute is over.
If we rely on etymologies alone, the two words can be used as you stated. But the dictionaries give additional meanings for each of the words.
