Un palo
En el contexto que leí, parece que un palo es una experience que vuelve
mál o una decepción grande.

¿Estoy en lo cierto? ¿Es un dicho común?

Sí, es como si te dieran con un palo, pero en sentido figurado:

¡Vaya palo! Me han echado del trabajo.
Qué palo me llevé cuando me dijo que no quería salir conmigo.

Aquí es muy común.

No en Chile.

Palos pueden ser miles o millones cuando se habla de dinero. También cuando se trata de sexo...

También "hacer pisar el palito" = trampa.

Vale. En españa se dice un palo cuando un estadounidense dice a kick in the pants, pero el modismo "un palo" no cruce el charco.

"Una patada en los... 'mismísimos'" (eufemismo) también se dice, pero suena un poco peor.

VAYA PALO has different meanings in English:
VAya palo, se ha matado su padre en un coche. (He had the misfortune to loose his father in a car accident)
Vaya palo, decirle ahora que no puedo ir al cine con ella. ( That´s too bad)
Sometimes, what a dissapointment.
La vida da muchos palos.

Here expressions with "palo/s" are very common...

"Me dieron con un palo en el trabajo"
"Te voy a matar a palos"
"¡Qué palo se comió!"

En resúmen:

palo
12. m. coloq. Daño o perjuicio. Dar, llevar, recibir un palo

As well you can find here that we use "palo" to reffer to a million pesos, and "palo verde" for a million dollars (although generally we use them indistinctly)
