"¿De dónde eres?" y "¿de dónde vienes?", son intercambiables. Si estás en un país extranjero, es obvio que viajaste desde otro, así que vienes de ahí. El énfasis está en el país de donde eres originario.
Si te preguntan de dónde eres, el énfasis está en tu calidad de extranjero.

De EEUU / Vengo de EEUU / Soy de EEUU (where I think the first is the most used and the last the less used one, but all are synoyms)

As it's been said, there is nothing wrong with saying "vengo de (tal país)", if you want to say what country you're from. It's certainly not the first choice of everyone, but it's correct and often heard.

Even if this is already clear, this thread reminded me one of the lyrics by "Les Luthiers. They have "Cartas de color" were they start, "Yo nací en el África, por eso mi piel es negra... mi nombre es Oblongo, que en dialecto swahili quiere decir, 'más ancho que largo'..."
Dicho sea de paso, (algunos ejemplos más): "Yo soy de España, vengo de Barcelona, y vivo en el Sur de California" "Mi hermana es de Barcelona pero vive y trabaja en Andalucía." "Cuando trabajaba en la Costa Brava, los cocineros del restaurante venían del Sur, de Jaén." "La mayoría de inmigrantes de color en España, (los que yo conocía) venían de Nigeria... ahora son de todas partes..." ![]()
