Elaina & Sosi, your points are well taken. It's just such a strange way for me to think about "being outside" ... because when you live in the land of "suburbia", "the street" always means a LOT of traffic - expressways, busy highways, interstates, etc. Many of these roadways have laws AGAINST pedestrians.... In fact, when I'm trying to be funny, I'll say to a student or to one of my nephews, "Go play in the street" - sort of like telling someone to "jump off a bridge"... It just startled me to hear it said that way. Maybe I need to move to the heart of the city to truly understand that kind of culture.

The culture here is complete the opposite.
Living in small towns or cities, the streets are a safe place, because everybody knows you.
Older people sit in front of their houses and speak with the passengers (also people of the town)
This kind of culture have given us this kind of language.
But now I agree the "street" it's not so safe.
Saludos

I grew up in the suburbs and we played in the street. In New York, kids go to the playground. The street has got too much car traffic--at least in Manhattan.

Like in every sentence in Spanish, if you don't have a context, you must provide it in order to be understood. Normally, conversations make a pretty clear context so everyone knows whom you're talking about, but if you feel there might be some confusion, use the pronoun.
