Poli,
I took the liberty to split this post off and start a new thread with it, since it's a new topic. Keeps thing nice and tidy, plus it helps others be able to search and find the information they are looking for. David. labrador - labrador/golden retriever (I think ![]()

I can only add that caniche and bull dog are also used in Spain.
And, for a dog of unknown origin, we say chucho. This is the kind of dogs I like most ![]()

Thanks a lot, Rusty, for your correction.
I like very much these words: mongrel and mutt. Thanks Iris and Rusty. Some other dog species in Spanish are: perro lobo, mastín, dogo but I don't know how to say these words in English.

Mastín translates to mastiff in English, which describes any of the large dogs used as guard dogs, like the Saint Bernard.
Perro lobo is wolfdog in English. This is not a dog species, but describes a hybrid breed created by mating a wolf with a German Shepard, a Huskie, or a Malamute. Dogo is apparently Dogo in English, but I admit that I've never heard of one before today. |

Hi,
En Hawaii le dicen a los "mutts" un "poi dog". En Puerto Rico les dicen "sato". I personally love chihuahuas and that is the type of dog I have. Feisty little things. gomey |

David, creo que te refieres a Chechu, igual que en España.
If I'm right that's you who should be careful not to call chucho a Chechu. Pls, tell me if you are positive Chechus are Chuchos. It would be really funny. ¿Qué significa aguas aquí?

No le dicen a los bull-dogs.....perros chatos? Lo he escuchado anteriormente.
German Shepherd - pastor alemán (in some places: perro policia) A mi, como a Gomey, también me gustan los Chihuahuas aunque en verdad no sirven para nada....solo son de lujo. Elaina ![]() |

Thanks a lot, Elaina. It sounded a little strange to me. So... Spanish is not the same everywhere. I think we should retain this. Sometimes we speak about our peculiar way of talking as it was the only existing one. And it's not.

Yes, it's. I realised after asking that ¡Agua! is used by illegal sellers and cheaters to warn their mates when the police is near. So here in Spain it's only used in crime environments. This is a zero register expression. But it's useful to get away from police.
