Ohai Spanish Forum!

Ahoy folks, I have been checking out your forum and I must say it seems rather awesome I currently have an abundance of free time on my hands, and wish to put it to some productive use. Hence; I now lurk these forums for the definite future.

My first contact with Spanish was during age 13 when I studied it once a week as a mandatory topic in school. At the time being, I did not care very much for learning another language (Which was strange, since I actually find languages interesting. On the other hand I was still a kid and felt somewhat uncomfortable riding my bike through town to end up in the random mish-mash class of students from different schools).

Anyhow, during the subsequent 6 years I barely used Spanish at all, so I now remember close to nothing. When I decided to learn another language however, Spanish instantly came to mind. I downloaded the podcast 'Coffe Break Spanish' and listened to the free season 1, which defibrillated my memory to a certain degree.

Listening to people teach the language was great, but I soon hit a point where I felt one could only learn so much from hearing other people speak the language without actually interacting in it on my own accord.
Long story short, I thought I'd hang around here and fire off some gramatically incorrect messages now and then, in the hopes of improving my ability to convey my thoughts a little

To introduce me personally, I'm 21 years of age and live in Sweden. I have been to a Spanish speaking country only once (Gran canaria) where I spake a total of 10 different words in total. Although I used those 10 words very, very often.
I effervesce adventure, and never pass up a chance to climb a good tree or the like. Which is what got me into geocaching. Other than running around outside looking like a total 10-year-old I crave a steady supply of boardgames to keep me amused. I play most about anything, but I often find myself enjoying competitive games with way too many rules more than the standard round of Monopoly. (I'm considering purchasing a Warhammer army, so if You want to discuss that with a newbie then by all means).

Jokerstyle out!

Hi Tomisimo.

Was it the link to the Geocaching website that was considered spam?
My apologies, I feel I need to add that the only reason I included the link was to give people reading my post a quick summary of what it was, I had no intention of promoting the website nor was it the intention of my post.

Since the website in question has no affiliation with anything that could be considered your competition, and is free to use and seemingly already quite widespread I misinterpreted the rules and thought it was okay to add the link.

Again, not to critize your decision, merely to make an attempt at justifying my thinking. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.

Edit: Dangit, I noticed the rule now: New members: Do not post any link to any website until you have established yourself as an earnest member of the community. Sorry about that!

But in other things I'm fine enjoy one relax in my house and the computer too.

Hmm, I think that así makes more sense in this context than aquí/acá.

Thanks for the replies!

...ací que hablo Sueco y...
is supposed to mean
...So I speak Swedish and...

According to some podcasts I've listened to and the almighty google translator, So is translated as Asi Que (I misspelled it in my sentence)I did a google search, and it seems entonces is also used in the sense of "therefore".

Which of these do you think is the most correct?
Vivo en Suecia, así que hablo Sueco
Vivo en Suecia, entonces hablo Sueco

Here are some corrections for that:
Quote:
I'm sorry I don't understand. Can you clarify your corrections? (In North American English, "can" is used to form polite commands. I'm not sure about other varieties.) I will try again taking into account your corrections. However I don't understand the part about my throat...

I'm sick of my throat = Tired of having a sore throat?
My throat hurts, and I have a throat infection, so I'm taking medicine now.

Medicaments is not a word.

"Sincerly yours" = Appropriate for a formal written letter, but not for a forum post. A better thing to say would be
"-CrOtaLiTo" (some people end forum messages with their name)
"Cheers!" (England English, Celtic English, and Oceanic English)
Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment. Most people don't sign form posts in English, whereas in Spanish saludos and others seem to be very popular. I think the closest equivalent is "Cheers!"

As Caballero said, to say "I'm sick of my throat" means "I am tired of my throat". If your throat hurts (Si te duele la garganta?) it is much more common to say "My throat is sore".

Sore may refer to:
  • A mild pain or ache
  • A small skin ulcer, usually open from skin infection
So:
I'm sick of my throat means I've had enough of my throat.
I'm sick in my throat
is a very awkward way to phrase it, it doesn't sound English. Sick is a very broad term, and it's better to specify and say sore (aching, sensitive, painful) or hoarse (when you get a raspy voice because you are sore). If you just say sick it sounds very serious.
I'm sore in my throat is one way to say it that will get you understood everywhere, but the following 2 ways sounds the most natural.

I have a sore throat is probably the most common way to say it, and it sounds very good.
I have a sore throat, so I won't be coming to todays practice.
My throat is sore is another very good way to say it.
My throat is sore and I'm becoming hoarse.

Did you understand why I made the correction?

Quote:
one week ago (Maybe 'A week ago' sounds better)
One week ago places (totally in my opinion) a bit of emphasis on the ONE.
Perhaps it's like saying ¿Tiene un carro? instead of simply ¿tiene carro?
Or at least in English, "Do you have ONE car?" instead of "Do you have A car?"
A week ago might sound more natural, and doesn't emphasise the one.

Quote:
I was sick of the same situation I had the same problem
Since you specified your problem earlier, I think this is a good way to say it.
Quote:
Where are do you come from?
I believe you might have mixed up two common phrases.
Where are you from?
Where do you come from?

Remember, they are both awesome but you have to pick one.

Yours truly

Hoy he entrenado en el gimnasio. Antes de eso, trabajé un poco y más tarde (después del entrenar) me y mi novia vimos la television.
Acabo de comer un helado chocolate y ahora estoy escribiendo un mesaje foros para vosotros.

Today I've trained in the gym. Before that, I worked a little and later on (after the training) me and my girlfriend watched television.
I have just ate a chocolate ice cream and I am now writing a forum post to you to you.

Did I get it slightly right? Also, is it allowed to start a general chat thread in the "Práctica y Tareas" forum?

Edit: And also, thank you everyone for the discussions and the welcome x)

There is a General Chat forum that is distinct from the Práctica y Tareas forum.

@ Jessica - Thanks! ^_ ^

@ wrholt - Thank you for the corrections, much obliged!

I understand the final 3 corrections, which seems to be spelling mistakes.

There are two however that you are very welcome to explain to me, if you would be so kind

Quote:
...me y mi novia y yo vimos la...
Has it changed from "Me and my girlfriend watched the..." to "My girlfriend and I watched the..."?
I did a google search, and found a site that says it's convention to place the other people first and yourself last (My friends and I, my girlfriend and I etc..) out of respect.
Is that why you changed it?

Quote:
...después del de entrenar...
Since I used the training as a point of reference in time, I thought it would be OK to write it in the definite article. But then again, I'm native to Sweden and that just how we roll :]
