Just for the sake of regionalisms, the colloquial expression in Mexico is "dar el gatazo".
I've heard a few Spaniards say "dar la pala" too how commonly is this expression used in Spain (or in other countries)?

Quizá sea una forma arcaica, aunque bien puede ser nomás un uso idiosincrático... lo oí de alguien muy mayor hace mucho tiempo; algunos de sus descendientes lo decían igual.
