Evité ir a dar....

“Gracias a la carta evité ir a dar a la carcel tres veces.“

Could this be said without the verb “dar“ or is this an idiomatic usage that requires it?

Thanks

No absolutely necessary use the word Dar, you can use Parar, therefore you can make the sentence of the following way.

Gracias a la carta evite ir a parar a la carcel tres veces.

I hope this can help you.

You can do without it. Or like Crotalito said use parar.
