I think that some people use the word "discussion" with a verbal inflection that "tongue-in-cheek" implies an argument. Some people will say "My husband I had a discussion about that..." and the way it is said, it is implied that it was an argument.

They're not *exactly* synonymous. An "altercation" can be verbal or physical. We use that word in teaching when we write up discipline problems. We have to distinguish.
"Argument" is always verbal.
