I came up with Puedo pagar ellos and Puedo comprar los.

If I was the one inviting, ie., it's my treat, it's on me, I'm paying... I would most likely say "Pago yo" "Yo pago las cervezas" "Yo pago la ronda" or "Invito yo".
"Puedo pagar por ellos" sounds to me more like someone challenging your ability to pay, and you say, something like "los compro, porque puedo pagar por ellos"... Yes, of course, everything could go, depending on the contexts...
