As a general reply:
· If it has a brim, it's a hat.
But: If the brim is not firm, like in some hats made of cloth, it can be called "gorro".
· If it has a visor ("visera") or has some sort of firm structure, it's a "gorra".
But: Military, religious or other specific styles may have a specific name, like "boina", "bonete", etc.
· If it's knitted or made of cloth, plastic, or any soft material that has no structure to keep its shape, it's a "gorro".
Having said all this, many speakers may use indistinctively "gorro" and "gorra" for these last items.
