The imperfect would talk about a habit or a repeated action in the past. The preterite talks about an action that happened only once.

I am still a bit confused. So saying My friend is Maria, would I use the imperfect because she is continuously my friend or the preterit? By the way my native language is English and I am sorry if I am bombarding you guys with stupid questions

If María is still your friend, you would use the imperfect to say she was your friend.
If that friendship had an end, you would convey that with the preterit.

What if Maria or the person who was friends with Maria were dead, but the friendship itself never came to an end in their life time?
