Yes, mal is a legitimate adverb.
![]() The adjective 'mal' can only appear immediately before a masculine noun. In all other cases, the adjective 'malo' (and the other forms of it that match gender and number) follow the noun it modifies. The noun locution 'el mal' means 'evil', 'harm', or 'wrong'. The noun 'mal' means 'sickness' or 'illness'. It can also mean 'disaster' or 'blow' (ill luck). The adverb 'malamente' is formed from the adjective 'malo', but it doesn't normally mean 'badly' (although some may use it in that sense colloquially). It's usually translated as 'with difficulty' or 'inappropriately/improperly'. This is why the adverb 'mal' is a better fit in almost every case, which is what I believe poli was trying to say. ![]() |

I agree with Rusty.
Also, when you attach "-mente" to an adjective, if the suffix is well attached to the root and the meaning is clear, the word is valid, even if it's not included in a formal list. "Malamente" is a well derived adverb and it has a clear meaning in context, so you don't have to worry about using it. ![]() To make an adverb ending in "-mente", you only have to use an adjective in feminine singular and the suffix. Language is rich and creativity is never forbidden if you and your listener do know what you mean. ![]() - corta·mente -> You might want to describe that something was done in a short way, but you must make sure your listener understands the same in context. ![]() - roja·mente -> I don't find any context where something would be done in a red way, so even if it's well built, it doesn't actually make sense, so it's not valid. ![]()
