Articles vs. Possessive Pronoun Adjectives

When I go to a dentist, he tells me: "abre la boca". Nobody else is going to open my mouth. "la boca" is the DO.

When I go to the vet with my dog, he tells me: "ábrele la boca". I must open her mouth because she wouldn't open it voluntarily. "Le" is the IO, "la boca" is still the DO. The vet wouldn't say "abre su boca", but "ábrele la boca" (not in Spain, at least).

You say "your mouth", I say "la boca". They are different ways of saying the same. Como con tantas otras cosas

I'm not sure, but I think English is out of line here, and Spanish conforms to other European language norms of using a definite article for body parts. It is not just Romance languages, either, because German and ancient Greek conform as well. I might well be wrong though.

And really, since when does English line up with ANYTHING logical or widely practiced by other languages?????

Catalonian: obre els ulls
Italian: apri i occhi
French: ouvre les yeux
Galician: abre os ollos

@pjt: nunca dije que es imposible. Dije que se trata de un énfasis innecesario.

Se asume que las partes de tu cuerpo son tuyas y de nadie más. No tendrías por qué abrir la boca de otra persona, si estás en el sillón del dentista para que te atienda a ti. "Abre la boca" es una instrucción que te da a ti, no a otra persona.

En tu ejemplo de "lávale las manos al bebé", tampoco dices "lávale sus manos al bebé". "Lávale" ya implica a la persona a la que te refieres.

Si alguien viene con las manos en los bolsillos, se asume que son los suyos, a menos que se aclare que venía con las manos en los bolsillos de la otra persona... cosa que haría ciertamente una postura interesante para caminar con alguien.
